According to the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists COVID 19 Practice Guidelines, The Occupational Therapist shall demonstrate safe work practices by identifying potential risks and minimizing those risks in the practice setting. COVID 19 protocols for in person visits will be discussed and followed during all in person visits at the child's home or in the community.
An initial occupational therapy assessment will be conducted with parents and the child to uncover areas of need and to put together the initial service plan with long term and short term goals and strategies. Other standardized assessments will be administered if /when required following discussions with the family.

Sleep history will be assessed, looking into which part of the sleep cycle has been affected. Providing bedtime routine strategies tailored for each family and strategies to facilitate staying asleep.
Assessing sensory processing difficulties with certain textures in clothing and/or task analysis of skills involved with getting dressed. Looking into independence with hand washing and bathing and any sensory concerns during participation in these tasks.
Assessing sensory processing concerns and the need for a sensory diet to improve day to day functioning, regulation and attention to task. Providing strategies to overcome or be able to function with sensory processing challenges.
Assessing pre writing or writing skills, use of hands during play and functional tasks. Providing strategies to improve fine motor skills and written output. Exploring use of technology for written output.
Looking into causes for emotional dysregulation and what the child is trying to communicate through meltdowns. Providing tailor made strategies for parents to respond to child's emotional regulation needs.
Assessing concerns related to Attention, concentration, planning, organization, memory skills. Providing strategies for child to use at home and at school or in the community.
Supporting parents with creating a sensory gym and/or calming corner at home. Providing specific recommendations for equipment based on child's unique sensory needs and budget available.
